Whether jumping into hyperspace on Star Tours: The Adventure Continues, building your own lightsaber at Tatooine Traders, or saying hello to BB-8 at Star Wars Launch Bay, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida is already home to many incredible Star Wars adventures in a galaxy far, far away. With the yet officially named Star Wars Land under construction now and opening in 2019, that galaxy is about to get bigger.
How Big Will It Be? (or “Judge me by my size, do you?”)
Spread throughout almost 15 acres, this amazingly detailed Star Wars fan must-see destination is the biggest single-themed land expansion in Walt Disney World history. When completed, this area will be larger than 10 full-size football fields. It’s a great big beautiful galaxy out there, and Disney is looking to show guests a whole lot of it. As you can see from this behind the scene picture, everyone from the AT-ATs to R2-D2 and even a few stormtroopers are helping out with the construction. Except for the year 2019, exact dates for completion/opening have not been yet released, but don’t be surprised if this area is ‘fully operational’ by May 4th 2019.
Where Are We Going? (or How many parsecs until we get there?)
Recent reports from our Rebel spies indicate guests will be transported to a remote trading post on a never-before-seen planet located in the Outer Rim. This world is one of the last stops before entering into wild space and serves as a hub for bounty hunters, smugglers, and aliens from across the galaxy. Much like the Mos Eisley spaceport, “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” Disney Imagineer Scott Trowbridge announced at the Disney D23 expo that the land will “engage all the senses. What does that street feel like? What does that animal smell like? What does blue milk taste like?” Yes, there will be blue milk. And we thought Ton-tons smelled bad on the outside.
What Attractions Will Be there? (or “This is where the fun begins”)
Details about the upcoming attractions are more difficult to obtain than plans to a Death Star. Luckily, by using our Jedi Mind Tricks, we were able to find out a few things. Sources tell us one signature attraction will allow guests to take control of the Millennium Falcon itself, piloting through space and battling with the Empire’s forces. This will likely be a mix between a motion simulator and a first-person shooter with guests taking on a variety of duties. Just don’t get cocky, kid.
Another incredible sounding experience puts guests in the hands of the First Order itself. This military dictatorship was first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, we know more about Snoke and Rey’s parents than we know about this adventure. However, Kylo Ren was able to ‘persuade’ some sources to give us an idea of what to expect. Apparently, guests will find themselves in the middle of a battle between stormtroopers and Resistance fighters. Guests can choose to participate and interact in some way or sit back and enjoy the story as it unfolds in front of them. Also, we can guarantee guests will likely meet an eclectic and entertaining cast of new characters, old favorites, unique beings, and plenty of droids.
What About Food? (or Will they serve droids?)
Another detail released by Disney tells us this area will feature two restaurant concepts for guests to enjoy. The first is a Mos Eisley themed cantina as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope. No word if our favorite Tatooine house band will also be featured. The second offering was partially revealed during the Disneyland 60th anniversary TV special. New concept art depicts a table-service style restaurant with “otherworldly street market” menu items that allow guests to experience “many of the local delicacies.”
